LAB 05 - TYPES OF GALAXIES

In this lab, you will be presented with pictures of galaxies from the Messier Catalog of deep sky objects.   For each galaxy picture presented, you will be using the information provided in the guide below to identify the type of galaxy in the image.

LAB 10 - GUIDE TO GALAXY TYPES.pdf

This lab activity has been setup to provide you with unlimited attempts.  The purpose here is to provide you with some measure of experience with identifying galaxies using the Hubble Classification system (not later systems).

NOTE - The process of classifying galaxies is very subjective.  For example, one astronomer might identify the Bulldog Galaxy with its small nucleus and loose arms as an Sc (spiral galaxy type c), while another would argue that the spiral arms are moderately wound and it should be classified as an Sb.  This process of naming and classifying is an ongoing process in ALL sciences as new observations, new information, and improved perspectives are applied to prior knowledge.
